No suspicious object was identified in an area near Lebanese airspace, despite earlier information and indications assessed in the morning, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said following the meeting of the National Security Council.

According to the briefing, all prescribed protocols were immediately activated and two aerial assets operated in the area for a considerable period, without any concerning findings.

Operational response and airspace clarification

Mr Letymbiotis clarified that at no stage was the airspace of the Republic of Cyprus closed. What occurred, he explained, was the allocation of the necessary airspace for the operations of the two aerial assets.

As a result, two flights were required to wait, one of which returned to its point of origin.

National Security Council review

He added that the National Security Council, under the President of the Republic, proceeded with the customary review of precautionary security measures, assessment of the situation and coordination of the competent services.

Following the meeting, the President of the Republic held a telephone conversation with the President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun. The two leaders discussed regional developments and the incident under investigation, reaffirming the close relations between Cyprus and Lebanon.
