1678: Composer Antonio Vivaldi is born in Venice.

1787: The new United States Constitution comes into effect.

1832: Jean-François Champollion dies. His studies enabled humanity to read the hieroglyphs of ancient Egyptian writing.

1852: Russian writer Nikolai Gogol dies.

1904: Ilias Venezis, writer and academic, is born.

1912: Suffragettes march through the streets of London, smashing windows in protest after the British government refuses to grant women the right to vote.

1915: With the support of France and Britain, Russia asserts claims over the Dardanelles and Constantinople.

1937: The social security system begins to be implemented in Greece.

1944: The first bombing raids against the German capital, Berlin, are launched by US bombers. In Athens, the Battle of Kokkinia begins between ELAS forces and German occupying troops along with local collaborators. The battle ends on 8 March with the withdrawal of the German forces.

1949: The Security Council decides to admit Israel to the United Nations.

1954: Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston announces the first successful kidney transplant.

1964: By United Nations resolution, Finnish diplomat Sakari Tuomioja is appointed mediator and a peacekeeping force is sent to Cyprus following the withdrawal of Turkish Cypriots from state institutions.

1966: John Lennon’s claim that the Beatles are more popular than Jesus triggers widespread reactions in the United States.

1968: Kyriakos K. Mitsotakis, Greek politician, is born.

1975: Charlie Chaplin is awarded a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

1977: More than 1,570 people are killed in Romania by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, leaving 35,000 homeless.

1997: US President Bill Clinton halts federal funding for research related to human cloning.

1999: Monica Lewinsky publishes a book about her relationship with US President Bill Clinton.

2001: A bridge collapses in Portugal, killing 70 people.

2008: Actress Elena Nathanael dies at the age of 68.

2010: The US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs recognises the 1915 mass killings of Armenians by the Ottoman Turks as genocide.

2012: Vladimir Putin wins the presidential election in Russia once again.
