Dust is expected to ease gradually by the afternoon, making way for localised rain and isolated thunderstorms in several parts of Cyprus. The main impact is forecast in the mountains and across the eastern half of the island, where hail is also possible.
A gradual improvement in conditions is expected from Monday, along with a slight rise in temperature.
Where the weather will hit today
Weak low pressure and an unstable air mass are affecting the region. Dust remains suspended in the atmosphere, although it is expected to subside gradually by the afternoon.
Today will begin with periods of increased cloud, which in the west and north are expected to bring isolated showers. Conditions will soon become mostly cloudy, with localised rain and isolated thunderstorms expected, mainly over the mountains and the eastern half of the island. Hail is possible in thunderstorms.
Winds will be mainly southwesterly to northwesterly and, inland, initially variable, weak to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort. By the afternoon, winds in the southeast are expected to become moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be generally slight.
Temperatures will rise to around 22C inland, on the south coast and on the east coast, around 20C in the rest of the coastal areas, and around 10C in the higher mountains.
Conditions tonight
Tonight there will be periods of increased cloud, which may bring isolated showers to the north, inland and in the east.
Winds will initially be southwesterly to northwesterly and later mainly northwesterly, weak at 3 Beaufort and at times up to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, along the coast. The sea will become generally calm to slight.
Temperatures will fall to around 12C inland, around 15C on the west coast, around 13C on the remaining coasts, and around 5C in the higher mountains.
Outlook for Monday to Wednesday
On Monday, most parts of the island will see intervals of increased cloud. However, in the mountains and in areas south of Troodos, cloud developing from around midday onwards is expected to bring isolated showers or thunderstorms.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, weather in most areas will be mainly clear with occasional cloud. In the mountains, however, cloud developing after midday is expected to bring isolated showers.
Temperature is expected to rise slightly on Monday and remain broadly unchanged through Wednesday, staying slightly below the average climatic values for the season.
