Strong Winds Warning Issued, Gusts Up to 7 Beaufort Expected

If you are heading out this afternoon or planning to be near the coast, take note. The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued a warning for very strong, and at times gale-force, winds of up to 7 Beaufort, in force until 9pm tonight. Secure loose objects, take extra care when driving, especially near the coast and in exposed areas, and keep an eye on updates if you are heading to the mountains.

What to Expect This Afternoon

Cloud cover will increase, mainly at mid and high levels, while winds will blow from the northeast to southeast. Wind strength is expected to reach 6 Beaufort and, at times, spike to 7 Beaufort, particularly affecting western and northern coastal areas, as well as parts of the south.

The sea will be rough, becoming rough to very rough later on, especially along the west and north coasts.

Tonight: Rain and Possible Snow

Tonight, skies will remain mostly cloudy, with isolated showers developing at intervals. At the highest peaks of Troodos, snowfall or sleet cannot be ruled out.

Winds will remain moderate to strong, reaching very strong levels along the coast, while temperatures will drop to around:

7°C inland

13°C along the coast

2°C in the higher mountains, where frost may form locally

Dust will also remain suspended in the atmosphere.

Tomorrow: Unsettled and Windy

Tomorrow’s weather will stay cloudy, with local rain expected and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms, particularly later in the day and into the evening. Strong winds will persist, occasionally reaching 6 to 7 Beaufort, while the sea remains rough to very rough.

Temperatures will rise slightly to around:

12°C inland

15°C along the coast

6°C in the higher mountains

Snow or sleet is again possible on the highest Troodos peaks.

Looking Ahead

On Friday, partly cloudy conditions are expected with occasional showers, while snow or sleet may continue at higher elevations. Saturday will start mainly cloudy with rain and isolated thunderstorms, before improving later in the afternoon. By Sunday, the weather turns partly cloudy at intervals.

Temperatures are expected to gradually rise through the weekend, settling close to or slightly above seasonal averages.
