From humidity and temperature levels in a museum to the lighting of exhibits, the construction of display cases and the way a cultural heritage object is transported, standardisation applies across a wide range of work connected to preserving monuments and cultural assets.
Anna Dionysiou, Standardisation Officer at the Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation (CYS), highlights this lesser-known dimension of standardisation in an article marking European Heritage Days, setting out the European and international framework of standards governing the conservation of cultural heritage.
As she notes, at European level the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) runs Technical Committee CEN/TC 346, "Conservation of Cultural Heritage," which develops standards and best practices for the methodologies and materials used in the conservation, repair and restoration of cultural heritage.
At international level, Technical Committee ISO/TC 349, "Cultural Heritage Conservation," was established in 2024. According to Dionysiou, the development of these standards aims to build a common approach to cultural heritage issues.
What can a standard regulate?
These standards, she explains, cover among other things the effects of temperature, water, humidity and air on both movable objects and buildings that form part of cultural heritage.
They also address how objects are displayed and how display cases are built, methods of transporting and storing them, and appropriate lighting conditions. Standardisation also covers the management of environmental and climatic conditions in spaces where cultural assets are stored or exhibited.
The standards extend to heritage buildings themselves, covering issues such as upgrading their energy performance, as well as specialised work such as methodologies for conserving and restoring wooden structures.
From European standards to Lefkara and Fyti lace
At national level, Dionysiou points to the development of standards for protecting and preserving traditional Cypriot crafts.
These include CYS 401:2022 for "Fythkiotika: woven Fyti embroidery on the loom," developed by the National Technical Standardisation Committee CYS/TC 25, "Fythkiotiko Weaving."
Similarly, CYS 400:2015, "Lefkaritiko Embroidery: Characteristics, Technique, Materials and Tools," was drawn up by the National Technical Committee CYS/TC 21, "Lefkaritika Embroideries."
These particular standards have previously featured in earlier CYS work on using Cypriot tradition as a tool of cultural diplomacy.
In closing, Dionysiou stresses the importance of greater Cypriot participation in standardisation work, particularly through the involvement of industry experts on the relevant committees. Such participation, she notes, can help build expertise, raise quality standards in the sector, and safeguard Cyprus's national interests in European and international standardisation processes.
