Cyprus told the UN Security Council that the safety of the Strait of Hormuz remains a shared international responsibility, highlighting its importance as a strategic lifeline for global energy flows and maritime trade.
Speaking on behalf of Cyprus, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Maria Michael underlined that security in the Strait is directly linked to international economic stability.
Aligning with the European Union position, Cyprus expressed strong solidarity with Gulf partners and Jordan and welcomed the extension of ceasefires in the region as an important step towards restoring stability.
The Cypriot intervention emphasised the need to restore safe, orderly and predictable navigation, stressing that this requires sustained engagement, coordinated messaging and concrete action. The protection of vessels and seafarers, in coordination with the International Maritime Organization, was highlighted as central to collective efforts.
Cyprus also underscored the importance of full respect for international law, particularly the principles of freedom of navigation and safe passage under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, as well as relevant Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2817.
Nicosia reiterated its support for the EU maritime security operations Atalanta and Aspides, noting their role in enhancing maritime awareness and strengthening vessel protection.
At the same time, Cyprus welcomed the UN Task Force initiative as a practical and forward‑looking mechanism, saying it offers a credible path to de‑escalation by supporting the verification, de‑risking and facilitation of essential maritime flows, including fertilisers, humanitarian aid and critical supplies. Cyprus said it stands ready to support the initiative’s operational implementation.
