The United Kingdom is preparing to deploy a second vessel to the Mediterranean, according to an announcement by the British Ministry of Defence. Britain is expected to send the RFA Lyme Bay for “maritime missions in the Eastern Mediterranean”.
Vessel placed on high readiness
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said the ship has been placed on increased readiness. “We have taken the decision to place RFA Lyme Bay on high readiness in case it is required to assist with naval operations in the Eastern Mediterranean,” the spokesperson said.
Amphibious support and humanitarian capabilities
The Lyme Bay is an amphibious landing ship equipped to operate as an aviation platform and includes medical facilities. It is frequently used for humanitarian missions and disaster relief operations. According to Sky News, the vessel can also provide logistical support, at-sea replenishment and operational assistance to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines worldwide.
