The government has described as important and highly useful the visit of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín, to Brussels, which has been rescheduled for July 13.
Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis told CNA that the government has been informed of the change in timing of Holguín’s visit, which had initially been scheduled for June 28.
“We consider it important and very useful that this meeting with the EU institutions will take place, taking into account the role the EU can play in supporting the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy,” Letymbiotis said.
He added that the link between progress in EU–Turkey relations and progress on the Cyprus issue is a stated position of the European Union, as reflected in the conclusions of the European Council in April 2024.
“This is a given. In light of the new initiative undertaken by the UN Secretary-General, the EU now has the tools and incentives to achieve progress on both simultaneously,” he continued.
It is also recalled that, in the meantime, the NATO summit will take place in Turkey on July 7 and 8.
