President Nikos Christodoulides is set to meet agricultural organisations today, Tuesday, to discuss the management of foot‑and‑mouth disease and related issues, including halloumi production.
The President will first meet the epidemiological team at the Presidential Palace at 09:30, where he will be briefed on the current situation. The meeting will also include an assessment and evaluation of measures already taken, including support schemes for livestock farmers.
Meetings with farmers
At 11:00, he will receive representatives of agricultural organisations, who are seeking decisive intervention from the government.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency on Monday, representatives said they want, among other things, a review of how the measures are being implemented to manage the crisis, as well as improved coordination and cooperation in enforcing controls to curb the spread of the virus.
They stressed the need for greater effectiveness in the response.
Compensation and production concerns
Farmers are also raising issues related to compensation and the wider knock‑on effects of the measures.
At the same time, agricultural organisations have expressed serious concern over decisions affecting halloumi production, which has also been placed on the agenda of today’s discussions.
