The Cyprus Radio Television Authority has called for children to be excluded from advertisements by mobile service providers, following a public complaint regarding an advert featuring children’s voices requesting electronic devices and mobile phones in a singing tone.
In a statement, the Authority stressed that children should not be used to promote products or services through arguments, particularly when they are not expected to purchase them themselves or comment on products for which they are unlikely to have the necessary knowledge.
Taking into account ongoing discussions among EU member states, including Cyprus, on setting age limits for children’s access to social media, as well as broader concerns about limiting children's use of mobile devices, the Authority recommends avoiding the participation of children in advertisements for mobile providers, mobile devices or other screen based electronic products. It also advises that such advertisements should not be directed at children.
