Police are investigating an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device outside the cultural club "To Steki" in central Limassol during the early hours of Tuesday. Authorities have cordoned off the scene and say all possibilities remain under examination as investigators work to establish those responsible and determine a motive.
The incident occurred shortly after 3.30am and prompted an immediate police response. No information has been released regarding injuries, while examinations at the scene remain ongoing.
Explosion and initial findings
According to Assistant Limassol Police Director Lefteris Kyriakou, police received information at approximately 3.30am regarding an explosion outside a premises in the city centre.
Members of the Limassol Crime Prevention Unit and the Criminal Investigation Department attended the scene and secured the area.
Preliminary examinations indicated that the blast was caused by the detonation of an improvised metallic explosive device containing a low-powered explosive substance.
Ongoing investigation
Mr Kyriakou said investigators are continuing to collect evidence and pursue information that may assist in identifying those involved.
Police are also taking statements as part of efforts to determine the motive behind the incident.
A dedicated investigative team has been appointed to conduct detailed inquiries aimed at fully clarifying the circumstances surrounding the case.
Examination of evidence
Responding to questions about the presence of surveillance cameras in the area, Mr Kyriakou said examinations are continuing and evidence is being collected and assessed.
He noted that it remains too early for investigators to draw firm conclusions regarding the incident.
The scene remained under police guard as forensic and investigative work continued.
Statements from premises operators
Mr Kyriakou said the premises recently changed management and that statements have already been obtained from the new operators.
He added that investigators are evaluating the content of those statements and that further action will be taken should relevant evidence emerge.
According to police, the premises operate only on certain days of the week and had remained closed on Monday.
Possible motives under review
Asked whether the incident could be linked to a youth organisation, Mr Kyriakou said all scenarios are being investigated at this stage.
He stressed that no possibility can currently be ruled out while inquiries remain at an early stage.
