Cyprus remains in constant communication with Greece and stands ready to provide any assistance required in the fight against the wildfires, Chief Fire Officer and National Fire Coordinator Nikos Longinos has said.
Speaking to CNA, Mr Longinos noted that the fires in Greece are being driven by strong winds, making firefighting efforts particularly difficult.
"There is a tremendous effort being made by the firefighting units in Greece," he said. "Things are not easy. The intensity of the wind is unfortunately continuing to spread the fire."
He added that changing wind conditions are complicating operations on the ground.
"It changes direction, creates spot fires and a huge battle is under way," he said.
Mr Longinos said Cyprus had already informed the Greek authorities that it would be willing to deploy its firefighting aircraft if needed.
"From our side, we have sent a message that we could dispatch our own aircraft. We are waiting for their response," he said.
"However, this is a major fire and larger aerial assets are required."
Support remains available
With regard to sending ground crews, Mr Longinos said the current needs primarily involve firefighting vehicles.
He noted that Cyprus could deploy only smaller vehicles, which would have limited usefulness under the circumstances.
"We are in constant communication with Greece. Whatever they need, we are at their disposal," he said.
Mr Longinos also said he has been in direct contact with the Chief of the Hellenic Fire Service.
"I have told him that whatever they require, we are ready to help," he added.
