The Transport Ministry is inviting tenders for a €41,900 project to install vehicle-actuated traffic lights at 15 junctions, with work due to begin in early October.

The Transport Ministry is planning to install traffic light systems that respond to real-time traffic conditions in Nicosia and Limassol, with work expected to begin in early October. The project, worth €41,900, aims to optimise traffic flow and improve road safety.

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works will accept tenders until 18 September for the project, titled "Supply, Installation and Operation of Vehicle-Actuated Signal (VA) Systems at Signal-Controlled Junctions in Nicosia and Limassol." The project involves the supply, installation, programming and operation of vehicle-actuated traffic signal systems, using above-ground detectors, at 15 signal-controlled junctions across the two cities.

According to a ministry announcement, the project is funded from national resources, with an estimated cost of €41,900, excluding VAT. Implementation is expected to take three months.

Adaptive signals at 15 junctions

The project aims to introduce "adaptive mode" signal control at seven junctions in Nicosia and eight in Limassol, through the installation and integration of above-ground detectors. According to the ministry, the system is designed to optimise traffic light operation through real-time vehicle detection and dynamic adjustment of signal timings, reducing vehicle delays, queue lengths and overall journey times at the selected junctions and along the corresponding road routes.

The project also aims to improve the efficiency of traffic flow and junction performance under varying traffic demand conditions, strengthen road safety and operational reliability at the affected junctions, and provide a scalable, easily maintainable detection and control system compatible with existing traffic signal infrastructure.

The tender will be conducted through an open procedure, with the contract awarded on the basis of the most economically advantageous offer by price. The detectors will carry a manufacturer's warranty of at least 24 months.
