The Kyrenia 'district court' has issued a further six-day detention order for 43-year-old Russian national Alexei Shokpa, who is wanted by Interpol in connection with the murder of Vangelis Zampounis in Athens and is being held in the north of Cyprus.
According to reports from the north, Shokpa was arrested on 24 August and detained. A three-day detention order was issued the following day and expired on Friday.
He is accused by the Turkish Cypriot authorities of entering a first-degree military zone, illegally entering the north of Cyprus and residing there illegally.
Travels
Details heard at Friday’s 'court' proceedings indicated that Shokpa had been travelling between the north and the Republic of Cyprus-controlled areas through an area near Ercan airport, which operates in the north.
Authorities continue their investigation, including into whether Shokpa may have committed other offences
They therefore requested, and were granted, a further six-day remand.
