The death toll from Wednesday’s devastating landslide in Nepal has risen to 579, while 1,924 people remain missing, the country’s disaster management authority said on Friday.
Hundreds of tourists and foreign pilgrims are among those missing. The deadly landslide struck an area near the border between Nepal and Tibet.
Chinese authorities have separately reported five deaths on their side of the border in Tibet, bringing the provisional cross-border death toll from the disaster to at least 584.
Ongoing threats
Rescue teams are racing against time as they continue operations to search for survivors two days after devastating floods killed more than 570 people in Nepal and China. The threat of further flooding remains.
Thousands of rescuers on both sides of the border have so far recovered 584 bodies — 579 in Nepal and five in China — from the torrent of mud that swept through the Himalayan region along the border between the two countries, according to the latest official figures.
The European Union will provide €2 million in emergency aid to Nepal following the widespread flooding, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Friday.
