Plans for a comprehensive amendment of the Police Law dominated talks between Justice and Public Order Minister Costas Fitiris and police union representatives on September 14.
The parties agreed to continue consultations and exchange proposals before the bill is submitted to the House of Representatives.
Further consultations agreed
The meeting brought together the leadership of the Pancyprian Public Servants’ Trade Union, the Cyprus Police Association and the police branch of the Isotita trade union.
According to a statement from the Cyprus Police Association, the talks were held in a constructive atmosphere.
Further meetings will examine all aspects of the proposed amendments, with both sides expected to submit recommendations before a final proposal is sent to Parliament for approval.
Working hours and allowances
The association also raised several employment issues, including rest days for police officers working under the “11-37” schedule. It proposed restoring the arrangement to its original form.
Danger allowances for station chiefs and branch heads were also discussed.
Police representatives additionally proposed amending the legislation to exempt the security services from the provisions governing overtime compensation between 2.30pm and 5pm.
The Cyprus Police Association said it would continue monitoring the issues and working to improve the working conditions, safety and protection of its members.
Proposals expected by mid-October
In a separate statement, Isotita said the Justice Ministry had agreed to send the union its positions for examination, allowing it to prepare and submit documented recommendations.
A timetable was set for the discussions and advancement of the proposals to continue until mid-October.
Isotita said it would maintain dialogue with all relevant authorities, seeking meaningful improvements for police officers and the force more broadly.
