The Dromolaxia-Meneou Municipality has taken a significant step towards the restoration and promotion of the historic Abu Bekir Aqueduct (Kamares), signing a contract for the preparation of the necessary studies and supervision of the project.
The agreement, signed on 29 September, is between the municipality and engineering consultancy A.F. Modinos & S.A. Vrahimis Architects & Engineers and covers the project titled “Enhancement of the Abu Bekir Aqueduct – Kamares.”
Project years in the making
According to a municipal announcement, the initiative is the result of efforts that began in 2021 under the previous municipal council, which launched procedures to advance the project.
Since then, consultations have been held with various government departments and authorities, including the Department of Antiquities, to secure the required approvals and prepare the groundwork for implementation.
€1.2 million project planned
The contract for consultancy services is valued at €58,000 plus VAT, while the estimated construction cost of the project stands at €1.2 million plus VAT.
The municipality said it is now moving toward the project's maturation phase with the aim of meeting all requirements necessary for inclusion in future European funding programmes.
Focus on cultural heritage
Municipal officials described the project as an important investment in the area's cultural heritage.
“The enhancement of the Abu Bekir Aqueduct – Kamares is a significant investment in our cultural heritage, aiming at the protection, promotion and utilisation of an important historical monument in our area,” the municipality said.
The study phase is expected to take approximately eight months.
