Heatwave Warning Today Before Weekend Storms Bring Sharp Cooldown

A yellow heat warning is in force as temperatures are set to reach 40C inland on Wednesday, but forecasters expect rain, isolated thunderstorms and a marked drop in temperatures by Saturday.

yellow warning for extreme maximum temperatures is in effect on Wednesday, with temperatures forecast to reach around 40C in inland areas of Cyprus.

The warning, issued on 25 August, is valid from 1.30pm to 4pm on Wednesday, 26 August, and has been classified at the yellow warning level.

Forecasters are also predicting a significant change in weather conditions by the weekend, with rain, isolated thunderstorms and noticeably cooler temperatures expected on Saturday.

Temperatures expected to reach 40C

Seasonal low pressure continues to affect the region.

After the dissipation of local low cloud and patchy mist along coastal and eastern areas, Wednesday's weather is expected to be mostly fine.

However, increased cloud developing over mountainous areas during the afternoon may produce isolated showers.

Temperatures are forecast to reach:

  • 40C inland
  • 32C on the west coast
  • 34C on other coastal areas
  • 29C in the higher mountains

Winds will initially be variable and light at around 3 Beaufort, becoming mainly southwesterly to northwesterly at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and temporarily 4 to 5 Beaufort along southern and eastern coastal areas.

The sea will be calm to slightly rough.

Mist expected overnight

Tonight, conditions will remain mainly clear, although periods of low cloud are expected.

During the early hours of Thursday, patchy mist or fog may form locally, particularly inland and in eastern parts of the island.

Temperatures are expected to fall to:

  • 23C inland
  • 24C on the coast
  • 22C in higher mountainous areas

Weekend weather change approaching

Thursday and Friday are expected to remain mostly fine, although afternoon cloud over mountainous regions could trigger isolated showers or thunderstorms.

A weather disturbance moving south from northern areas is forecast to affect Cyprus temporarily on Saturday.

The system is expected to bring:

  • Localised rain
  • Isolated thunderstorms
  • Increased cloud cover

Sharp drop in temperature

Temperatures are not expected to change significantly before Friday and will remain above seasonal averages.

However, a noticeable drop is forecast for Saturday, when temperatures are expected to fall below normal levels for the time of year.
