DIKO MP rejects criticism from AKEL and Alma, saying the party’s support for Annita Demetriou was aligned with its political priorities.

DIKO MP Chrysis Pantelides has defended his party’s decision to support Annita Demetriou in the second round of voting for the presidency of the House of Representatives, arguing that the move served the goal of political and institutional stability.

In a post, Pantelides said the Democratic Party supported Demetriou in the second round and, as a result, helped secure her re-election as President of the House.

He said the decision was consistent with DIKO’s political objective of protecting fiscal stability, Cyprus’ development path and social cohesion, as well as ensuring the smooth functioning of the state.

Pantelides also said that, as he has repeatedly pointed out, the most important legislative achievements of both DIKO and the current administration also bear the mark of the Democratic Rally.

Referring to AKEL and Alma, Pantelides argued that the two parties have adopted a declared and largely unproductive opposition stance.

He added that Demetriou’s re-election, with what he described as DIKO’s “winning vote”, was a step towards stability.
