The support of Immediate Democracy proved decisive in securing Annita Demetriou’s re-election as President of the House of Representatives, with the party of MEP Fidias Panayiotou ultimately backing the DISY leader despite keeping its position undisclosed until the final stage of the vote.
Shortly after the parliamentary procedure, as the parliamentary group of Immediate Democracy and Panayiotou congratulated Demetriou, the two sides publicly announced that they had agreed to promote three specific policy proposals.
The first concerns a one-off financial grant of €5,000, €10,000 or €15,000 for each child from the third onward in large families.
The second focuses on pensions, with the aim of aligning low pensions with the minimum wage, which, according to what was stated, currently stands at €1,008.
The third concerns housing and provides for the creation of 10,000 new homes through an increase in building density, with the aim of expanding housing supply and reducing rents.
Demetriou said that Panayiotou had not requested any exchange for his support beyond the promotion of these specific policy proposals.
For his part, the MEP explained that the decision to support DISY was linked to the fact that the party came first in the recent parliamentary elections with 27% of the vote, arguing that it should therefore have a leading role in the new House.
The announcements mark the first public record of the political cooperation that took shape between the two sides in the context of electing the new President of the House.
