The Energy Minister says DIKO should back President Nikos Christodoulides for a second term in 2028, provided he continues to implement the agreed government programme.

Energy, Commerce and Industry Minister Michalis Damianos has sent a clear message of support for President Nikos Christodoulides ahead of the 2028 presidential elections, stressing that DIKO should support him if he continues to implement the agreed governing programme.

Speaking on Politis Radio 107.6 & 97.6 during the programme Morning Review with Katerina Eliadi, Damianos, also in his capacity as vice-president of DIKO, made it clear that he was expressing a personal opinion. Nevertheless, he outlined what he believes should be the framework within which the party operates ahead of the next presidential election.

As he stated, if Nikos Christodoulides decides to seek a second term and continues to implement the governing programme agreed with DIKO, then the party's support should be considered a given. "Then, as a democratic party, I believe we should support the President," he said.

Damianos acknowledged that there is room for improvement in cooperation between the Presidential Palace and DIKO, particularly on issues of coordination and communication.

Despite this, he stressed that his personal working relationship with the President is very good, while expressing the view that the government has not, so far, made any serious mistakes.

On energy matters, Michalis Damianos also provided clarifications regarding the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), noting that no decision has been taken to abandon the project and that a relevant study is expected by the end of the year.

He also confirmed that the €25 million payment relating to the previous year was not made.
