The Isotita trade union has renewed its dispute with the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, accusing it of attempting to silence criticism over conditions in Cyprus’ prisons.
Responding to the Ministry’s reference to “media noise”, the union said the Ministry was seeking “to silence the voice of truth through labels and threats that this will be the ‘last time’”.
Union calls for immediate action
“The noise is not coming from us,” Isotita said in its statement.
“Stop the communication games, abandon the threats and finally address the substance of the issue. Deliver immediate results for the safety of prison officers and inmates,” the union told the Ministry.
Isotita said the situation required seriousness rather than “noise”, arguing that this meant protecting human life instead of managing the crisis through public communication.
“The real disturbance is not the exposure of the problems, but the longstanding inability to resolve them,” it said.
The union also claimed that the language used by the Ministry revealed “a deeply authoritarian mentality and a desire to silence” criticism.
