NBC News journalist Kristen Welker became the focus of attention after a tense exchange with US President Donald Trump on Meet the Press, during which he attacked her personally and abruptly ended the interview.
The confrontation unfolded after Welker challenged Trump over his claims of election irregularities in California and asked him repeatedly to present evidence. Trump insisted the election process was “rigged” but did not provide proof, saying instead that he was relying on what he had seen and heard from others.
As the exchange escalated, Trump accused Welker, NBC and other US media organisations of bias and corruption. He then told the presenter she was either “stupid” or “corrupt”, before removing his microphone and leaving the interview.

Who Is Kristen Welker?
Welker is one of the most prominent political journalists in the United States and the current moderator of NBC’s Meet the Press, one of the country’s longest-running political interview programmes.
Born in Philadelphia in 1976, she studied American history at Harvard University before beginning her career in local television. She worked for several local stations before joining NBC News in 2010.
Welker later became a White House correspondent, covering major political developments during the administrations of Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Her national profile grew further in 2020, when she moderated the final presidential debate between Trump and Biden, drawing praise for her handling of the event.
In September 2023, she became the 13th moderator of Meet the Press, succeeding Chuck Todd. She had previously served as co-anchor of Weekend Today and as NBC News chief White House correspondent.
What Happened in the Interview
The tension began when Welker asked Trump about recent primary election results in California. Trump claimed the process was “rigged” and argued that the delay in counting votes showed there was wrongdoing.
Welker pushed back, noting that vote counting in California can take several days as part of the state’s normal election procedures. She asked Trump to provide evidence for his claims, but he did not cite specific proof.
Trump became increasingly combative, accusing the media of being “crooked” and criticising NBC as a biased network. He also attacked other major US broadcasters, including ABC, CBS and CNN.
Welker attempted to continue the interview, but Trump said he wanted to stop. He told her he had already given her enough time and left the set, despite her efforts to ask further questions.
