China aims to attract 190 million inbound tourist visits by 2030 under a new five-year tourism development plan, as Beijing seeks to boost domestic consumption and strengthen international exchanges.
The action plan, approved by the State Council, also sets a target for annual spending by inbound tourists to exceed $150 billion, equivalent to approximately €131.23 billion, by the end of the decade.
Improving services for foreign visitors
The plan calls for higher-quality tourism services and a stronger international presence for China’s tourism industry.
Authorities intend to improve the experience of foreign visitors throughout their journeys across the country, addressing several practical barriers that can make travel more difficult.
Wider visa-free access and better connections
Beijing plans to expand visa-free travel arrangements and increase both air and rail connections with international destinations.
The plan also includes measures to simplify payments, transport, communications and accommodation services, alongside improvements to tax refund procedures for foreign visitors.
AI translation tools and guide training
China will also strengthen translation services by improving the training of tour guides and expanding the use of artificial intelligence-powered translation devices.
The measures are intended to make travel across the country more accessible while supporting China’s broader tourism and economic objectives.
