The Trump administration is further tightening immigration controls during President Donald Trump’s second term, with US diplomatic missions preparing to revise the scheduling of immigrant visa services. The move comes as the White House’s wider deportation and immigration crackdown faces legal obstacles.
Training begins at diplomatic missions
A US Department of State spokesperson said on Tuesday that training had begun at all US embassies and consulates worldwide.
Appointments for visa services will be adjusted while the training is under way, the spokesperson said.
The department provided no further details about the training or how long it would take to complete across its diplomatic missions.
Broader immigration crackdown
Trump has pursued a more aggressive deportation campaign and broader immigration crackdown. Measures have included the revocation of visas and green cards, as well as the rejection of applications for reasons including political views and involvement in pro-Palestinian protests.
The president has said the campaign is intended to improve domestic security, although it has encountered legal challenges.
Court overturns 75-country measure
On Friday, a court overturned an administration decision suspending the issuance of immigrant visas to applicants from 75 countries.
The court ruled that the policy exceeded the lawful authority of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Focus on public benefits
The State Department said the training was intended to help consular officers screen out applicants considered likely to rely on US public benefits.
It is also intended to ensure that visa applicants are assessed “comprehensively and consistently”.
