Outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there are "serious suspicions" of foreign interference in the country's elections, while President Isaac Herzog urged political forces to seek compromise in order to form a government.

In a recorded message, Netanyahu claimed that foreign governments had spent substantial sums of money in an effort to influence the election result.

"There are serious suspicions that foreign states spent enormous amounts of money in an attempt to influence the results of the elections in Israel."

Netanyahu also criticised opposition figures who have expressed willingness to cooperate with Arab parties as part of a governing coalition.

He argued that such a government would be unable to confront extremist Islamist groups and would deepen divisions within Israeli society.

Meanwhile, Herzog called on political parties to work towards compromise as efforts continue to form a new government.
