President Nikos Christodoulides has reiterated his intention to meet with the newly elected Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhürman, according to a statement made today by Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis.
Speaking to RIK’s Proino Dromologio programme, Letymbiotis revealed that Christodoulides attempted to contact Erhürman by telephone on Sunday, though this was not ultimately achieved.
Letymbiotis emphasised that the Greek Cypriot side remains committed to intensifying momentum on the Cyprus issue. He described as a “very positive step” the reported position of the new Turkish Cypriot leader in favour of resuming negotiations.
“The framework of the six points presented by UN Secretary-General António Guterres constitutes both the starting point and the catalyst for traversing the final stretch towards a solution,” Letymbiotis said.
He also highlighted that a key moment in the coming period will be the visit of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín. Her meetings on the island, along with the forthcoming informal expanded meeting, are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the path forward.
