The bicommunal Technical Committee on Youth is holding a two-day retreat in Amman, convened by the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín. According to a post by UN Cyprus on X, the retreat is supported by Sweden’s Agency for Peace, Security and Development (FBA) and brings together young people from across the island to build trust and discuss ways to address shared challenges.

Why it matters

Youth engagement has been one of the most resilient tracks in the peace architecture around Cyprus. Creating space for joint problem-solving can seed practical cooperation projects, lower social mistrust, and help generate bottom-up momentum that complements high-level diplomacy.

Recent diplomatic track

In 2025 the Secretary-General hosted two informal meetings on Cyprus, in March in Geneva and in July in New York. A tripartite meeting with the two leaders followed in late September on the margins of the UN General Assembly High-Level Week. An additional broader-format meeting is anticipated later this year.

Holguín’s mandate is to engage the parties and test pathways back to structured negotiations. Former European Commissioner Johannes Hahn has been designated by the European Commission as Special Envoy for Cyprus and is expected to contribute in coordination with Holguín.
