Cyprus Records Fastest Rise in Median Age Across the EU

Eurostat data show the country registered the largest increase in population median age over the past decade, with figures rising from 37 to 41 years between 2015 and 2025.

Cyprus has recorded the steepest increase in the median age of its population within the European Union, according to new data published by the European Statistical Service. The figures indicate a significant demographic shift over the past decade, with the country’s median age rising by four years. Eurostat notes that similar growth was observed only in Slovakia during the same period.

Eurostat findings on demographic change

According to the European Statistical Service (Eurostat), as of 1 January 2025 the median age in Cyprus and Slovakia increased by 4.0 years compared with 2015. In Cyprus, the median age rose from 37 years in 2015 to 41 years in 2025.

The data form part of Eurostat’s broader population indicators assessing demographic developments across the European Union.

EU-wide trends in median age

Eurostat reports that, at EU level, the median age increased by 2.1 years since 2015, rising from 42.8 years. Increases were recorded in all member states except Germany and Malta, where a decrease of 0.4 years was observed.

After Cyprus and Slovakia, notable increases were registered in Italy (+3.9 years), Greece and Poland (+3.8 years), and Portugal (+3.7 years).

Population age ranges across member states

The median age of the EU population reached 44.9 years, meaning that half of the population is younger and half older than that age. Across member states, the indicator ranges from 39.6 years in Ireland to 49.1 years in Italy.

Native-born and foreign-born population comparison

According to Eurostat, the estimated average age of the native-born population in EU countries was 2.1 years higher than that of the foreign-born population. The figures stood at 45.2 years for native-born residents compared with 43.1 years for those born abroad.
