On Wednesday evening, a 56-year-old woman lost her life in Ano Glyfada. According to authorities, the woman was walking in the area when she became trapped beneath the wheels of a vehicle that had been swept away by a torrent of floodwater. The Fire Service was called to the scene to carry out an extrication, but she was recovered unconscious and later pronounced dead.

Earlier in the day, a 53-year-old coast guard officer was killed in Paralio Astros after being swept into the sea by a powerful wave. The officer was on foot patrol at the local harbour, accompanied by the head of the port authority, when a wave struck as vessels were being secured. He was knocked to the ground, suffered a head injury and died at the scene.

Meanwhile, violent thunderstorms that hit Attica late in the afternoon caused widespread disruption, particularly in the southern suburbs of Athens. The Fire Service received hundreds of calls for assistance, while power outages were reported in several areas of the metropolitan region.

According to meteorological forecasts, the severe weather phenomena are expected to gradually weaken by midday on Thursday.
