The government will examine the response to the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak and rising prices linked to the war in the Middle East during Monday’s Cabinet meeting. The session is scheduled for 4:00 pm and is expected to focus on measures to support the livestock sector and prevent profiteering in the market.

President Nikos Christodoulides said on Saturday that the country is facing a difficult period that requires decisive action. Speaking during a meeting in Pachna, Limassol, on the implementation of recovery planning for fire-affected areas, he indicated that the Cabinet would decide on a specific support plan for livestock farming.

Support plan for livestock sector

The President stated that the government will work closely with all organised groups and stakeholders affected by the outbreak.

He said the aim is to take all possible steps to regenerate and further strengthen the livestock sector in Cyprus.

Measures against profiteering

At the same time, President Christodoulides stressed that the government will show zero tolerance toward profiteering linked to price increases resulting from the regional conflict.

He said the issue will also be discussed during the Cabinet meeting, warning that authorities will not allow businesses to exploit the situation at the expense of consumers.

The President also recalled that measures are already in place, including a zero VAT rate on specific goods and subsidies for electricity costs.
