A busy week for the Cyprus problem begins tomorrow with the arrival of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, just months before the end of his term and in an effort to leave with concrete outcomes on the resumption of talks after the collapse of Crans-Montana in 2017.
Guterres arrives on the island on Monday evening, travelling from Syria. His Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín, who arrived in Cyprus on Saturday, is due to meet President Christodoulides at 9.30am on Monday, the Presidency confirmed. She will then meet the Turkish Cypriot leader at 11am the same day.
Separate meetings on Tuesday
On Tuesday morning, the UN Secretary-General will meet President Christodoulides, who on Saturday met Prime Minister Mitsotakis in Athens for coordination talks. Guterres' meeting with Tufan Erhürman is scheduled for 11.45am on Tuesday.
At midday, the UN chief will lay a wreath at the Peacekeepers' Memorial outside the Ledra Palace, and at 4pm he will visit the Committee on Missing Persons' laboratory. Meetings with the two sides' negotiators, the heads of the bicommunal Technical Committees and representatives of civil society are scheduled to follow.
In the evening, Guterres will attend a private dinner with the two leaders at the residence of the Special Representative, Khassim Diagne, at Nicosia Airport.
On Wednesday morning, Guterres will hold a joint meeting with the two leaders at Nicosia Airport, and will give a press conference immediately afterward.
