Reports of cat thefts in Paphos have sparked concern among animal lovers, who are calling for a full investigation and measures to safeguard the animals.
Members of the public who may have witnessed suspicious activity or have information about the incidents are being urged to contact the relevant authorities to help bring an end to what campaigners describe as an unacceptable situation.
Greens seek answers
The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens' Cooperation has expressed hope that allegations involving the trapping and removal of cats in the Kato Paphos area will be thoroughly investigated and clarified.
In a statement, the movement called for the necessary measures to be taken to protect the animals and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The party also questioned why those involved allegedly continued removing kittens despite being aware that a local caretaker was looking after them and objected to their removal.
According to the Greens, the caretaker possesses video footage that appears to show an individual trapping a pregnant cat, while also capturing the animal's reaction and its attempts to escape from the cage.
Calls for inspection of location
The movement has further called on the authorities to inspect the location where the animals were reportedly taken, determine the purpose of their transfer and take any necessary legal measures.
It also urged officials to ensure that the cats are not transported abroad until the circumstances surrounding the case have been fully established.
The case has heightened concerns among animal welfare groups in Paphos, who are seeking swift action from authorities to determine what happened to the animals and whether any laws were breached.
