On Wednesday, 10 June, the Larnaca Municipal Tenders Board is expected to officially award the contract to the successful bidder, C. Rousias Trading & Development Ltd. This marks the starting point for a project considered one of the most significant infrastructure developments in the city in recent decades.
Since the early 2000s, Larnaca has been without a dedicated municipal building, with services currently housed in a six-storey building on Athens Avenue along the seafront.
Larnaca mayor Andreas Vyras told Politis that the municipality has received written confirmation from the State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY) that the old hospital has been fully vacated by all health and sanitary services. This clears the way for the contractor to begin restoration works.
The municipality aims for construction to start in early September. The redevelopment is expected to take approximately two years to complete.
The prolonged delay in relocating health and sanitary services from the site had been the main factor holding back the project, which involves the restoration of the historic listed building dating back to 1934.
Local authorities consider the old hospital on Grigoris Afxentiou Avenue an ideal location for municipal services, given its central position in the city.
Funding for the project has been secured through a loan from the Ministry of Finance via the European Investment Bank.
