President Nikos Christodoulides has held talks with senior Chevron executive Javier La Rosa on the development of the Aphrodite gas field and the next steps towards its commercial exploitation.
Christodoulides described the development of Aphrodite as a strategic priority for the Republic of Cyprus, saying significant progress had been made recently.
From planning to implementation
The president said the project must now move from planning to implementation, maintaining the current momentum while accelerating the steps required to advance development.
According to a written statement by the Government Spokesman, the meeting reaffirmed both sides' commitment to developing Aphrodite on the basis of the approved Development and Production Plan.
The two sides also discussed progress on technical and commercial work and the next stages towards reaching a Final Investment Decision.
Christodoulides emphasised the need to accelerate the timetable so that final decisions can be taken as soon as possible, paving the way for the start of natural gas production.
Cyprus-Egypt energy cooperation
The meeting also addressed the strategic energy partnership between Cyprus and Egypt and progress towards exploiting Aphrodite's gas through existing Egyptian infrastructure.
The Government Spokesman said this option could significantly strengthen the commercial development of gas discoveries in Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone, while supporting regional energy planning and greater connectivity in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The successful development of Aphrodite would represent a major milestone for Cyprus, according to the statement.
It is also expected to strengthen the Eastern Mediterranean's role in European energy planning and contribute to efforts to improve energy security.
