Heavy Rain Reported Across Nicosia, Larnaca and Mountain Areas (Video)

Showers and thunderstorms are forecast through Wednesday before clearer conditions return from Thursday.

 

Downpours affected parts of the capital on Monday afternoon, while lighter showers were recorded elsewhere in Nicosia and the surrounding district. Rain and thunderstorms were also reported in Larnaca, the mountains and other parts of Cyprus.

Storm cells move eastwards

According to Kitasweather, local rain and thunderstorms continued across northern Nicosia and areas farther north and northeast, with further activity over the eastern Troodos mountain range.

The weather systems were moving slowly eastwards, while new rain and thunderstorm cells were expected to form over eastern Troodos within the following one to two hours.

Videos from Strovolos and several other areas showed the conditions as the storms moved across the island.

Forecast for Monday night

The unstable air mass affecting Cyprus is expected to recede from Thursday.

Monday night will be mainly clear, although locally increased cloud is expected along the coasts. Light mist may form later and during the early morning, mainly in southern and eastern areas.

Winds will initially be westerly to north-westerly, light to locally moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, gradually becoming light offshore winds of up to 3 Beaufort.

The sea will remain slight in the west and north, becoming smooth to slight in the south and east.

Temperatures will fall to around 21C inland and along the southern coast, 22C along the remaining coasts and 15C in the higher mountains.

More thunderstorms possible on Tuesday

Tuesday will begin mainly clear, but clouds developing around midday and during the afternoon are expected to bring local rain and isolated thunderstorms, mainly over the mountains and inland areas. Hail is possible during a thunderstorm.

Winds will initially be variable and light at up to 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming mainly south-westerly to north-westerly at 3 to 4 Beaufort. During the afternoon, winds may strengthen to 5 Beaufort along windward coasts and in areas affected by thunderstorms.

The sea will gradually become slight.

Temperatures will rise to around 34C inland, 30C along the western and south-western coasts, 32C along the remaining coasts and 25C in the higher mountains.

Tuesday night will be mainly clear, although locally increased cloud is expected across the western half of the island. Westerly to north-westerly winds will initially be light to locally moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, gradually easing to no more than 3 Beaufort.

The sea will remain slight in the west and locally in the north, becoming smooth to slight elsewhere.

Conditions improve from Thursday

Wednesday will be mainly clear, although clouds developing around midday and during the afternoon may bring isolated rain or a thunderstorm over the mountains and inland areas.

Mainly clear conditions are forecast for Thursday and Friday.

Temperatures will remain largely unchanged on Wednesday before rising noticeably through Friday, reaching levels above the seasonal average.
