The proximity of Liopetri A Primary School to a military camp and nearby storage facilities has prompted MPs to seek assurances over pupils’ safety.
Education Minister Athena Michaelidou said the matter is being addressed through cooperation between the Education and Defence ministries, while the school remains under regular monitoring.
Ministries coordinate on safety
Michaelidou was responding to questions submitted by MPs Giannakis Gavriel, Nikos Kettiros and Giorgos Koukoumas regarding the school’s proximity to the Modestos Panteli military camp.
She said she fully understood the concerns raised and stressed that the Education Ministry places particular importance on the safety and wellbeing of every child attending the school.
The issue is being treated with the necessary seriousness and in close cooperation with the Defence Ministry and the relevant military authorities, she said.
Preventive cooperation between the two ministries is already in place to safeguard pupils, according to the minister.
School remains under monitoring
Michaelidou added that the Department of Primary Education, in cooperation with the ministry’s Technical Services, is monitoring the situation.
The department also remains in direct contact with the school’s management so that it can be informed immediately of any problem or disturbance.
MPs seek information for residents
The MPs noted that, in addition to the main military camp, storage facilities are located around the site and in close proximity to the primary school.
They said this had raised safety concerns among local residents, particularly parents whose children attend the school each day.
The MPs also argued that the presence of such facilities made it necessary for the local community to receive full information about their use and the safety measures in place to protect pupils and nearby residents.
