The next instalment in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is taking shape around a possible return by Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said discussions with the actor are under way while work continues on the screenplay.
Disney developing new script
Speaking to Deadline during the D23 convention, held from 14 to 16 August in Anaheim, California, Bruckheimer confirmed that Disney hopes to work with Depp again.
“We are talking to Johnny, working on a script and hoping we can complete it,” he said.
Depp’s involvement has not yet been finalised. Bruckheimer, who has consistently supported his return, told EW last year that the actor was open to reprising the role provided he liked the screenplay.
Reported plot and cast
According to World of Reel, the story will reportedly centre on Jack Sparrow’s son and a new character to be played by Margot Robbie.
The screenplay is being written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns, whose credits include the film 1917.
Franchise box office
If the deal is completed, the film would mark Depp’s first appearance in the franchise since Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, released in 2017.
The film grossed $795.9 million worldwide, recording the series’ lowest box-office performance. Across its five films, the franchise has earned more than $4.5 billion globally.
