Amid continuing speculation over a long-awaited cabinet reshuffle, DIKO leader Nicolas Papadopoulos has confirmed that names of party officials were discussed during consultations with the Presidential Palace.
President Nikos Christodoulides has yet to announce the anticipated reshuffle, but reports suggesting a stronger DIKO presence in the new government gained momentum after Mr Papadopoulos's remarks on Monday.
Speaking on state radio and asked about claims that the reshuffle would carry a strong "DIKO flavour", Mr Papadopoulos said the matter ultimately rests with the President of the Republic.
"This is something that concerns the President of the Republic. We have always believed that the Democratic Party can help in the implementation of the government's work. That has always been our position," he said.
Mr Papadopoulos added that DIKO had already conveyed its position to Mr Christodoulides and remained ready to contribute to the government's agenda.
Potential names discussed
Asked whether DIKO had submitted specific names for ministerial posts, Mr Papadopoulos confirmed that discussions with the Presidential Palace covered both the composition of the Council of Ministers and possible candidates.
"As part of the consultations with the Presidential Palace, we exchanged views with the President of the Republic on the composition of the Council of Ministers and on possible names," Mr Papadopoulos said.
The DIKO leader was quick to clarify, however, that the final selection of individuals to participate in the new government remains the exclusive responsibility of the President.
