The Welsh singer behind hits including Total Eclipse of the Heart, Holding Out for a Hero and It's a Heartache has died in hospital in Portugal following an illness, according to a statement issued by her family.

Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh rock singer known for her distinctive raspy voice and a string of international hits, has died at the age of 75.

According to a statement published on her official website, the singer died on Wednesday night in a hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness for which she had been receiving treatment.

“Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” the statement said. “We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Wales, Tyler rose to global fame in the 1980s with chart-topping hits including Total Eclipse of the Heart, Holding Out for a Hero and It's a Heartache. Her powerful vocals and enduring popularity made her one of the most recognisable voices of her generation.

Tyler had been hospitalised in Portugal earlier this year following emergency intestinal surgery. Her family later reported that she had emerged from an induced coma but remained seriously ill.
