The European Union has announced €2 million in humanitarian aid to support communities affected by devastating flash floods in Nepal, which have killed more than 500 people.
According to a statement from the European Commission, the emergency funding will help meet immediate needs including food, healthcare, clean water and sanitation. EU-funded partners are already providing assistance on the ground.
The funding comes on top of almost €3 million in humanitarian aid allocated to Nepal earlier this year to strengthen preparedness for natural disasters.
Roads swept away
EU partners in the country began providing assistance immediately after the disaster, using emergency shelter supplies and distributing relief items. The EU is also deploying its Rapid Response Coordinator for Asia to help coordinate the Union’s response.
To support the response on the ground, the EU has activated the Copernicus satellite service to provide maps of the affected areas.
EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib said: “Roads have been swept away. Villages have been cut off. Families are searching for loved ones who are missing. The flash floods in Nepal have shocked communities that were already trying to recover from previous disasters. The EU stands with them, providing €2 million for emergency healthcare, food, water and shelter.”
