The armed forces of Yemen’s internationally recognised government announced strikes against the Houthis in Sanaa and Saada, as fighting escalates in recent weeks.

The armed forces of Yemen’s internationally recognised government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia, announced that they had launched attacks against Houthi positions in the capital Sanaa and in Saada province, a stronghold of the pro-Iranian rebels.

Earlier, the Houthi-affiliated television network Al Masirah had referred to a “Saudi attack” against Sanaa. There has been no confirmation from Saudi Arabia so far.

On Saturday, the Houthis announced that they had struck facilities belonging to the Saudi oil company Aramco in Riyadh with ballistic missiles and drones. An Agence France-Presse (AFP) journalist reported that a fire broke out at Aramco facilities south of the Saudi capital.

In 2022, the coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government and the Houthis signed a ceasefire agreement, which significantly reduced hostilities.

However, clashes flared up again in the summer and have been escalating in recent weeks.

In September, the Houthis seized areas along Yemen’s Red Sea coastline, strengthening their control over the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects Europe with Asia through the Suez Canal.
