Three statements will initially be placed under the scrutiny of a team of FBI specialists currently in Cyprus to assist police investigators examining the “Sandy” case.
The FBI team held its first meeting on Wednesday morning with members of the investigative unit set up at police headquarters to examine all aspects of the allegations made by Makarios Drousiotis.
During the meeting, the American officials were briefed on the details of the case, the progress of the investigation and the statements collected so far. In turn, the FBI specialists outlined how and where they intend to focus their work, as well as how they will contribute to the ongoing police inquiry.
Preparatory work had already begun at police headquarters following the decision to bring in the FBI, including the translation of statements and other evidence gathered during the investigation to facilitate the work of the foreign experts. A source told Politis that the FBI team will initially examine statements from three individuals: the woman known as “Sandy”, who is presented as the central figure in the case; Makarios Drousiotis, whose post in late March triggered the controversy; and Nikos Clerides, who had initially appeared as Sandy’s legal representative before later stating that he does not represent her.
The FBI team specialises in analysing complex cases and evaluating evidentiary material, particularly witness statements. It includes forensic analysts, psychologists and criminologists who apply specialised methodologies used in forensic psychology to assess credibility, psychological condition and behavioural patterns.
In addition to these three statements, testimonies from other individuals gathered during the police investigation into Drousiotis’ allegations may also be examined.
Once the review is completed, the FBI team will prepare a report with its findings and recommendations for police investigators. Depending on the outcome, it will be determined whether a new round of statements is required, including from individuals who have already testified, or whether the case file can be finalised with a clear picture of the evidence.
Police sources reiterated that the FBI team will not take part in interrogations or the taking of statements.
Police statement
In a written update, police said the special investigative team continues its work “at an intensive pace in all directions” regarding the allegations made by Drousiotis.
“A large number of statements have been taken so far, with the process ongoing. At the same time, evidence and testimonies are being continuously assessed with the aim of fully clarifying all aspects of the case,” the statement said.
It added that a meeting had taken place with the FBI delegation, which has been tasked with assisting the investigative team, while results are also pending from forensic examinations of evidence by Europol experts. Police said their aim is to complete the investigation as soon as possible.
Awaiting Europol findings
No update is expected this week from Europol regarding the forensic examination of electronic devices sent by police. Current estimates suggest the results are likely to be delivered next week and will be incorporated into the broader body of evidence.
Focus on Savvides appointment claim
In recent days, attention has centred on claims by Drousiotis alleging a link between former AKEL secretary-general Andros Kyprianou and the appointment of Attorney General Giorgos Savvides. Kyprianou has denied the claim.
On Wednesday, Drousiotis posted video excerpts from a podcast featuring Savvides and former president Nicos Anastasiades, which he argues support his allegations. Former DISY president Averof Neophytou also commented on the issue, stating that the proposal for Savvides’ appointment had originated from Kyprianou.
