Tuesday is expected to be the coldest day of the winter so far, according to Panayiotis Liggi, an officer at the meteorology department.

Speaking to Politis, Liggi said particularly strong winds are expected overnight, reaching force six to seven on the Beaufort scale in the west and south-west of the island, mainly affecting Paphos and Akrotiri. Snowfall is continuing in the Troodos mountains, while snow or sleet is expected tonight at lower mountain elevations.

“There is a chance that residents of mountain villages above 1,000 metres may see light snow or sleet tonight,” he said.

Rain, strong winds and low temperatures

On Tuesday, the weather will be partly cloudy at times, with isolated showers or a brief thunderstorm initially in the west and north and later in the north, inland areas and the mountains.

Winds will blow mainly north-westerly, moderate to strong at force four to five and locally very strong at force six. The sea will be rough in the south and east and very rough along the remaining coasts.

Temperatures are expected to reach around 12°C inland, 15°C on the coast and about 2°C in the higher mountain areas.

Conditions to gradually improve

On Tuesday night, increased cloud is expected at times, bringing isolated rain to the north and mountainous areas. Winds will gradually ease to light or moderate, while the sea will remain rough.

Weather conditions are expected to be mainly clear on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, increased cloud may lead to isolated light rain in the mountains.

Temperatures are not expected to change significantly on Wednesday, with a gradual rise by Friday to near seasonal averages of around 15–16°C.

Snow depth at Chionistra currently stands at 15 centimetres, with snowfall continuing since late morning at a heavy rate.

Troodos roads restricted

Police announced that roads leading to Troodos are open only to vehicles equipped with anti-skid chains or four-wheel drive due to recent snowfall.

Specifically, the Karvounas–Troodos, Platres–Troodos and Prodromos–Troodos roads remain open under these conditions. Police also warned that dense fog is affecting the Troodos area, limiting visibility, and urged drivers to exercise caution, maintain safe distances and use their vehicle lights.
