Nicosia has been ranked second among European destinations for 2026 in a public vote organised by European Best Destinations. The city secured 109,214 votes from international travellers worldwide. It was also recognised as Europe’s Best Cultural Destination 2026.

The distinction emerged from a global vote involving more than 1.3 million participants who were invited to select the European destination they most wish to visit in 2026.

Recognition by European Best Destinations

According to the Nicosia Tourism Board, the ranking reflects growing international visibility for the Cypriot capital. In addition to placing second overall, the city was awarded the title of Europe’s Best Cultural Destination 2026.

The Nicosia Tourism Board said the recognition marks an important milestone in its long-term strategy to strengthen the city’s international positioning.

Tourism profile and year-round strategy

Nicosia combines Venetian walls, Gothic architecture and centuries-old institutions with contemporary galleries, design studios and a developing gastronomic scene promoted under the Taste Nicosia identity.

The city is positioning itself as a year-round destination, offering international events, sporting initiatives, culinary experiences, boutique shopping and wellness activities. According to the Nicosia Tourism Board, this approach aligns heritage preservation with contemporary urban development.

International visibility and strategic impact

The Nicosia Tourism Board stated that recognition by European Best Destinations provides substantial international exposure and measurable strategic impact. It noted that such distinctions enhance visibility in key markets, strengthen media positioning, reinforce investor confidence and consolidate presence in high-value tourism segments.

The Board described the award as a milestone within its broader strategy to position the capital as a Mediterranean centre for culture, events, sport, gastronomy and lifestyle, while maintaining its historical identity.
