The dam is ready to capture the first winter inflows after a ventilation redesign that fixes inspection and maintenance flaws dating back to its original build.

Optimism over Paphos’ water situation is rising with the completion of restoration works at Mavrokolympos Dam, which is now ready to collect the first winter flows. According to information from the site, water has already begun to accumulate, an encouraging sign for boosting reserves during a period of severe drought and rising demand.

The dam was recently emptied after a technical fault in the ventilation system. Like other dams built in the 1960s-1970s, the original design placed the ventilation conduit within a wet environment, making inspection virtually impossible.

Under the new redesign, the old ventilation system was decommissioned and a modern system with upgraded valves installed. The upgrade now allows regular maintenance and effective monitoring of the outlet works during operations.

Done in-house with veteran expertise

A notable aspect of the intervention is that it was carried out using the Paphos District Office’s own personnel, with technical support from central services and the contribution of two former Water Development Department officials: Dr Kyriakos Kyrou (former WDD Director) and Charalambos Kridiotis (Civil Engineer). Their involvement helped expedite a solution that strengthens both safety and operational reliability.

With inflows already under way, the dam’s return to service offers a timely boost to regional water security, supporting households and agriculture as the district braces for another dry spell.
