The Louvre Museum has announced the creation of a Department of Byzantine and Eastern Christian Art by 2028, expressing its gratitude to its sponsors, including the A. G. Leventis Foundation, according to a statement from the French Embassy in Cyprus.
The museum highlighted the decisive financial backing of a community of donors committed to establishing the new department.
According to the announcement, by 2028, the Department of Byzantine and Eastern Christian Art will offer visitors a fresh perspective connecting Islamic arts with Roman antiquities.
Visitors will have the opportunity to admire, contextualise, and better understand the masterpieces of Byzantine art, from the origins of Christian iconography to the early 20th century.
The Byzantine gallery, located at the heart of the Denon Wing, will cover more than 2,200 square metres and will benefit from a complete renovation of its architectural spaces alongside upgrades to technical facilities.
To ensure the project reaches its full potential, the Louvre has brought together a community of dedicated donors. Contributions have already reached 42 million euros and the campaign remains open, allowing additional supporters to participate.
The Louvre expressed its deep gratitude to all sponsors who have supported the initiative, mentioning in particular the A. G. Leventis Foundation.
