The Cyprus Consumers Association’s annual assessment records better courtesy and cleaner premises at dining venues, but also significant price swings for food and drinks that in some cases double or even triple depending on area and venue type. Based on 200 visits nationwide, the survey also flags ongoing gaps in staff training and toilet cleanliness.
The assessment was carried out between May and September 2025 using mystery shopping. It covered 41 service touchpoints across 200 dining venues in all districts. The research was subsidised by the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry.
Service levels and staff politeness remain good, with signs of improvement in cleanliness. Persistent issues include delays in service and inadequate standards in toilets.
Price gaps
The survey shows large disparities in basic items from venue to venue.
• Water ranges from €1 to €4.50, even though in many cases non-bottled water is offered free.
• Soft drinks range from €1.50 to €5.00.
• Beer prices reach up to €6.70.
• A salad for 2-4 people ranges from €3.50 to €15.00.
• Chips cost €3 to €8.
• A chicken dish ranges from €13 to €25.
• Pork ranges from €7.50 to €25.80.
• Lamb shows the sharpest increase, priced from €14 to €30.
• Meze is priced at €15 to €25 per person.
• Seafood meze reaches up to €28.
• A shrimp dish ranges from €13.10 to €28.
• Platters range from €29 to €42.
• Pizza ranges from €15 to €20.
Trends versus 2024
Compared with 2024 there are increases in many categories. The Association also notes attempts by some restaurants to hold sticker prices down by reducing portion sizes or the quality of certain ingredients.
Evaluators report that several venues still use non-authentic or adulterated products, such as halloumi or olive oil, in an effort to contain costs. A slight improvement is noted in 2025 versus previous years.
Conclusions and recommendations
Most problems stem from insufficient training and professionalism among staff, though evaluators acknowledge progress in service speed and courtesy. The Cyprus Consumers Association recommends closer cooperation between the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, professional associations and consumer organisations to strengthen training, cleanliness and price transparency.
The Association stresses that improving the image of dining venues is integral to upgrading the visitor experience and boosting the competitiveness of Cyprus tourism.
