The Electricity Authority of Cyprus has expressed concern over reported plans by CYTA to expand into the electricity sector.

According to the EAC, CYTA intends to move not only into electricity generation but also into supply, a development the Authority believes could create unfair competition between two state-owned organisations.

Speaking to state radio, EAC chair George Petrou said that any amendment to the legal framework governing the sector should be preceded by meaningful and substantive dialogue.

At the same time, the EAC is preparing to announce major investments in photovoltaic parks later this month. The Authority has already awarded a contract worth approximately €40 million for energy storage systems at Dekeleia, which are expected to become operational within 18 months.
