The Rio De Janeiro favelas witnessed an unprecedented bloodbath, even by Brazil's tragic standards, with 64 people killed, including 4 police officers, during a massive crackdown on organised crime, with more than 2,500 members of special foces and other units taking part.
It was a dramatic rise in the number of victims, as earlier local reports put the death toll at 20.

The UN High Commissioner's Office for Human Rights (OHCHR), expressed its abhorrence and concern over the widespread police operation, citing excessive use of force.
In a post on platform X, the international organisation said that the crackdown is 'empowering extremely deadly consequences of such operations in marginalised Brazil communities'.
It went on to remind Brazilian authorities of their human rights commitments based on international law, demanding an immediate, comprehensive and effective investigation.
